"New RR Bridge

"Photographed by CW Tallman, Batavia NY"

1875

This remarkable image was taken from the west side of the Portage Gorge in the summer of 1875. The original wooden bridge had burned in May, and the construction of the iron replacement was quickly underway. Here the main towers have been completed, and workmen are working on the what would become the deck of the bridge.

The Portage railroad station and the Cascade house can be seen in the distance.
