Real Photo Postcard

Photographer Probably Frank Hewitt

circa 1915

This postcard is labeled "Residence of Walter Chafee, Smoky Hollow." Smoky (or sometimes Smokey) Hollow was a small farming community in the northern part of the Park. Although the people are not identified, they are probably (right to left) Edna Hewitt (see Image 142) little Evangeline Chafee, her mother Jennie, and her older brother Clair(e). Their father, Walter Chafee, is not shown in the photograph. (We have based the identification of the Chafee family on the 1910 federal census listing.)

It maybe that Edna Hewitt was boarding with the Chafee family when she taught at the local school.

Also see Image 124 for a general view of Smoky Hollow.
