A Song for Mary Jemison

The life of Mary Jemison has been memorialized in many different ways.

In the early years of the 20th century George L Washburn of Castile, NY. wrote and published this musical piece that tells the story of Dehgewanus, the famous captive. Washburn was a local photographer noted for his fine stereoviews and photographs of the Castile area, including what is now Letchworth Park. We will let the reader judge his musical talent!

Although the historical narrative from the inside of the cover contains some historical inaccuracies, this "Piece of the Past" does provide a interesting look at how the Jemison story was viewed at the time. The statue, featured on the cover and mentioned in the last verse, had been dedicated on the Council Grounds only four years earlier.
