The Highbanks Area of Modern Letchworth State Park

Original Map drawn by Jeffery Brooks, Letchworth State Park, with additional labels

This postcard from the early 1900s shows the north end of the Mt Morris Highbanks in the Park. The postcard to the right shows a modern view taken from about the same location.

The most popular man-made feature of the Highbanks (with perhaps the exception of the swimming pool) is the Mt. Morris Dam. Completed in 1952, it is shown in this hand-drawn postcard published by J. Lee Folts of Mt Morris in the early 50's. The view is from the east bank downstream from the dam.

This real photo postcard is postmarked 1907. It was taken from the riverbed, looking north from about where a dam will be built almost a half century later.

The Whitmore House was a popular spot for tourists a century ago. This postcard is titled "River from Whitmore, Crow's Nest." The Whitmore stood just north of the restaurant that overlooks the dam.

The same view from a real photo taken during the winter. Some buildings near present day Mt. Morris can be seen in the distance to the right of the river.

As the message on this postcard indicates, the Highbanks was a good place to visit or spend a vacation. Vera had a "nice time" and so will modern visitors to the beautiful Mt. Morris Highbanks of Letchworth State Park!
